This compact solid wood entryway bench/table is a custom piece made from up-cycled and new materials--the best of both worlds. It started as the teak companion cabinet made to sit atop a mid-century credenza (they were long ago separated); it was not functional on its own, and in fact, it was broken. But, it was made from solid teak instead of the more prevalent teak veneer on a substrate, and therefore worthy of attention. Mike trimmed what had been extended sides that sat on that missing credenza. He then added solid oak legs that he designed and made himself, which have complex yet clean angles of their own and also create more dynamic angles in the way they are attached to the piece. Mike made the slender angled oak handles as well, which are connected to the piece with cylindrical gold metal tubes--subtle yet interesting. He gave both the handles and the legs his signature ebonized hand-applied and hand-rubbed out finish, and meticulously re-oiled the teak for enhanced beauty and durability. And there you have it: a gorgeously restored and completely re-crafted piece of modern furniture, strong enough to dance on and easy on the eyes.
