Both J. Knowles Hare and Gene Pressler painted dreamy girls for magazine covers and advertisements all through the 20's and 30's, in the style of Maxfield Parrish. This lovely piece was chosen by Hudson's Big Country Store in Coalgate, Oklahoma (opened in 1900, this famous store closed its doors in 1991) as part of their series of Season's Greetings cards. The distinctive decorative matting, with the gilded line, is original -- the smaller print is affixed to it.
The back of this piece has the original attribution by Hudson's, to J. Knowles Hare, calling it My Gypsy Sweetheart. But, the internet seems to insist that Gene Pressler painted this piece. So, we leave it to you to decide which story you prefer. It matters not to its considerable charm.
We had it professionally framed by the experts at Make A Frame here in Brooklyn. In excellent condition despite being nearly 100 years old, this beauty now sits behind glass in a beautiful decorative wood frame, with the original text from Hudson's preserved on the back.
